As a New Zealander am I entitled to work in Australia?

New Zealand citizens do not need a work permit or visa to work in Australia. As a New Zealand citizen, after arrival you will need to apply to the Australian Taxation Office for a tax number in order to work in Australia. You will be required to produce your passport or birth certificate and proof of address as identification.

Are NZ qualified Lawyers and Chartered Accountants qualified to practice in Australia?

Solicitors

New Zealand lawyers do not need to sit any additional exams in order to be admitted in New South Wales. The Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 enables New Zealand solicitors or barristers to be able to apply for automatic admission as NSW solicitors.

You do not need a practicing certificate in New Zealand to be admitted in NSW. You will however need a Certificate of Standing to be admitted to an overseas jurisdiction. Usually the certificate must be less than 30 days old. You can obtain your certificate through the NZLS website. You enter the required information on the webpage and click "submit query".

Accountants

Provided you are a current financial member in good standing, and you gained your membership by completing the normal education, professional examinations and service requirements of NZICA, you may apply for membership of the ICAA.

UNITED KINGDOM

As a New Zealander, am I entitled to work in England?

Young Commonwealth citizens may be eligible to enter the UK with the status of 'working holiday-maker'.  Please be aware that there have been some major changes to the UK's immigration system.

For more information on practicing requirements go to the website of The New Zealand Lawyers' Society, an informal body which was established in 1993 to promote the interests of New Zealand law and lawyers in England. They have a membership of approximately 300-400, comprising solicitors, barristers, academics, corporate, banking and business lawyers, and students.
